Distilled
in the famous Speyside region of the Scottish Highlands,
Speyburn Single Malt Scotch Whisky was first produced
on the 15th December 1897. The distillery was built
from carved stone taken from the former bed of the
River Spey. When production first started, the still
house has not yet been fitted with windows or doors;
and as a fierce snowstorm was sweeping through the
valley the men had to work in overcoats. The distillers
were anxious to have some casks filled bearing the
date 1897 because this was the diamond jubilee year
of Queen Victoria - just one butt was bonded.
Speyburn
was the first Scottish Malt Distillery to install
a stream-driven mechanical malting system
The
distillery is know as ' The Gibbet' because of its
situation near the ancient ' Cnock na Croiche' or
Hillock of the Gibbet'
The
first manager was Mr John Smith who held his position
for 31 years
