Link 51 Storage ProductsLink 51 has over 50 years experience in manufacturing and installing warehouse storage systems for all industries across Scotland.

Link 51 designs, manufactures and installs innovative racking systems for scotch whisky distilleries across Scotland used in the storage of all types of whisky casks. All systems are tailored to the individual customer’s requirements maximising both access to and protection of individual casks as well as high levels of safety for staff.

All solutions are designed to optimise cask storage capacity, improve usability and safety aspects whilst providing an economical solution that is fast and easy to install. The system can be installed in both new build projects and into existing structures. The system is modular in construction which makes installation times significantly quicker than traditional welded iron racking systems.

Accessibility to casks is increased due to the walkways built into the system which provide plenty of room to manoeuvre. Safety is key to the design, which prevents people from climbing into the racking. The lighter colour of the racking also helps to create a better working environment for all staff.

Regular rack inspections are part of complying with Control of Major Accident Hazards (COMAH) Regulations 1999, which means checking the alignment, footbolts of the system. This is made easier thanks to the racking’s light colour making it easier to see if there are any impacts.

Link 51 Storage ProductsA recent Link 51 installation can be found at The North British Distillery Company at Muirhall, Edinburgh. This installation was designed to hold 36,000 casks, each holding up to 500 litres, which after maturation will give 4 million cases.

Other key features of this system include;

  • Walkways run the length of the lanes to enable warehouse operators safe access to each cask
  • Racks are 8 levels high where Butts and Puncheon casks are housed and 10 levels high for Hogheads (These heights can be exceeded subject to additional sprinkler protection.)
  • Lanes can accommodate up to 17 Puncheon or Butt casks, or 22 Hogsheads
  • Ease of access also makes regular rack inspections, part of complying with Control of Major Accidents Hazards (COMAH) 1999, much easier.

In existing buildings all systems are designed around the potential building space to give optimum storage capacity. For new maturation sheds the building should be designed around the proposed maturation racks.
